3 kids rescued, certificates lost as fire guts Anambra building

The fire outbreak which gutted four room bungalow at Number 1 Ezingwu Street, Ebe, Umuokpu Awka, Awka South LGA of Anambra state has rendered properties worth millions including academic certificates to ashes.

The inferno suspected to be caused by electrical malfunction, allegedly occurred while power was restored in the area, when occupants of the family building were away.

One of the occupants of the building, Miss Blessing Uchendu, who is a staff of the Anambra Broadcasting Service, Awka, said it took them as surprise as it happened barely six hours the family left to work.
Uchendu said it was her 17-year-old cousins, Miss Chinenye Igwedimma, that met the house ablaze when she had come to perform some chores that helped rescue three kids in the building.

“She pull out three kids who were sleeping in the already-burning house, removed some items she could and raised alarm to attract helpers,” she added.
She said she met her academic certificates from primary school to university level had turned to ashes when she arrived home following a phone call from her cousine.

It took combined effort of the Anambra State Fire Service and residents of the area to put off the inferno which had almost reduced the house to aches.
Speaking on the incidence, the Principal Fire Superintendent of the Anambra State Fire Service, Mr Emmanuel Nze, said tracing the cause of the fire outbreak was a herculean task as there was no adult at home when it started.
