3 Nigerians crash at 1st day of Wheelchair Open

Apart from the defending champion, Alex Adewale the three Nigerians that played in the early hours of yesterday lost out in first round of the 2nd edition of Puma Engineering Wheelchair tennis Open going on at the National Stadium Tennis Centre.

But defending champion, Adewale wasted no time in cruising into the second round after a handsome 2-0 victory over Ghanaian Abdulrasak Nuhu who he decisioned 6/0 6/2.

Adewale said that although the Ghanaian proved a hardnut to crack in the second round he was happy to triumph at the end.

“It is a tough game. I don’t know his capacity, but I eventually brought the curtain down on him. My focus is to go on and retain my title and qualify for the Paralympics Games in Morocco next year March,” the Nigeria’s number one Wheelchair player said.

His opponent Nuhu admitted defeat but said he would endeavour to revenge when next he meet the Nigerian in any competition.

In the other matches decided yesterday, Kenyan Rajab Athman who will be meeting Adewale in the next round defeated Nigerian Austin Benedict 6/3 6/3, Tazania Novatus Temba drubbed Nigeria Vershima Mende 6/1 6/1 while Benue State Williams Ukari lost gallatly to Kenyan number three seeded Collins Lumumba in the rubber at 7/5, 5/7 6/4.

The tournament which point earning one continues today in the second round in the men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles and women’s doubles.
