4 cops in trouble for ‘extorting’ N70,000 from student

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four Police Inspectors for allegedly harassing and extorting N70,000 from one 16-year-old student, on January 18, at NGAB Junction, Isheri Area of Lagos state, in a Toyota Corolla car.

The picture of the policemen that were caught in the unprofessional act had gone viral on the social media which attracted the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) of the Nigeria Police Force, Force Headquarters Abuja, to track the policemen.

A press statement by Police Public Relations Officer (FPRO), CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Fridaybim Lagos, said: “The matter was subsequently referred to the Lagos State Police Command for further action.”

He named the policemen arrested as:  Inspector Emmanuel Michael, 40, with Force number: 223329; Inspector Subday Odubiyi, 40,  with Force number: 146504;  Inspector Lawrence Amedu, 39, with Force number: 256496; and Inspector Aroye Dickson, 40, with Force number: 255043.

The spokesperson said, “After due interrogation, the policemen confessed to the crime and refunded the N70,000 to the student, on bond, which forms the key credible evidence/exhibit in the case.”

He said the Commissioner of Police in charge of Lagos state, Hakeem Odumosu, has condemned the act of the policemen, which is detrimental to the image of the Police Force and counterproductive to the ongoing reform agenda of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu.

Adejobi said the police boss has, however, ordered the orderly room trial of the policemen so as to serve as deterrent to other criminally-minded police personnel.
