The Executive Director, Hacey Health Initiative, Ms Ronald Robinson, Tuesday, said 400 community leaders in Oyo, Ekiti and Osun states have agreed to support the war against female genital mutilation (FGM).
Ms Robinson stated this while speaking through the Programme Officer, Mr Emmanuel Oni, at a sensitisation workshop themed ” Learning and Experience Sharing Workshop,” held at Koltoltel, Ikolaba area of Ibadan.
The Hacey Initiative director stated that this was part of the achievements so far recorded by the Hacey Initiative and its partners in the ongoing crusade against FGM.
She added that of the community leaders, over 100 of them are from Oyo state.
She stated further that there is need for all hands to be on the deck towards ensuring total eradication of FGM in and across the country, considering its negative effects on the females.
Speaking at the workshop, the Oyo state Reproductive Officer, Mrs Balqees Olawoyin, reassured that the state government is committed to the prosecution of persons perpetrating FGM.
Mrs Olawoyin stated that many success stories are not being recorded on FGM because violators are allowed to go as it is being handled as a family matter in most cases.
Mrs Olawoyin said Oyo state government will not relent in ensuring that violators are brought to book, including conspirators within family members.
Stakeholders at the sensitisation workshop identified traditional leaders as the the best to handle all forms of violation against the girl child and women.
