41 persons die in road accidents in Borno in 2013

No fewer than 41 persons died in separate accidents in 2013, the commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Abbah Bazza, said yesterday.
Bazza made this known to news men in Maiduguri, at the inauguration and swearing of the executives members of the Borno Heavy Trucks Central Branch (BHTCB).
He said that the victims died in 313 cases of accident during the year. The commandant added that 182 persons among the accidents victims also secured severe injuries while 90 persons among them came out for smoothly.
He said the FRSC had in the last three month apprehended more than 813 persons with several road offences pointing out that most of the accident recorded on roads was due to the disregard to traffic rules and regulation in the part of the drivers.
The commandant lamented that out of the large numbers of motorist in the state; only 6,312 came to obtain new drivers’ license and only 2,791 came to obtain the new number.
Bazza urged the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to sensitize its members on dangers of over speeding, driving with bad vehicle condition and also updating their papers to enable them operate well in their commercial business activities.
He further urged them to be coming to the command in every last Saturday of the week to attend its free driving school.
Also speaking, Alhaji  Bello Muhammad, the chairman of the Borno NURTW, said that the heavy trucks central branch was inaugurated by its union to facilitates commercial businesses between the state and other Central African Republics like cotonou, Libya and Niger.
Muhammad said the union would also inaugurate the Borno Township Motorist Union (BTMU), to help in checking every vehicle coming into the town to safeguard people against any unsuspected attacks by members of Boko Haram.
He attributed must accident to bad roads, pots holes and lack of shoulders on the highways in the state and urged the federal government to rehabilitate the roads.
