450 school athletes storm UniAbuja

Barring last minute adjustments, almost 500 students’ athletes from various higher institutions of learning will this weekend square up against each other at University of Abuja (UniAbuja) for three-day Karate championship for the first time.
Put together by Nigerian Universities Karate Association (NUKA) in collaboration with Nigeria Karate Federation and UniAbuja, the event will feature 12 athletes each from 37 universities across the country.
Disclosing this in Abuja, NUKA President, Mohammed Mustapha explained that already interested schools have made entries and that final collation would be done on Wednesday ahead of the maiden Nigerian Universities Karate championship which starts on Friday.
According to Mustapha, “Adequate arrangements have been made and I want to thank UniAbuja management for their support. Interested schools wanted to register more than 12 athletes each but we put the benchmark at 12 due to logistics reasons.”
Earlier, UniAbuja Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic, Professor Joseph Nwana while underscoring the importance of Sports to human bodies hinted that competitions such the upcoming Karate event would further unravel hidden talents amongst Students.
Professor Nwana expressed regret that Students in recent times seem to have lost interest in sporting activities and preferred entertainment and other quick money spinning ventures but was swift to state that the only university in the Nation’s capital has placed human-capital development as top priority adding, “Our school is only 30 years since it was established. We have been working out modalities on best ways to produce champions but at the moment, we have not produced world beaters. I’m optimistic that it will happen soon.”
