48 chiefs receive staff of office in Taraba

Taraba state government today presented staff of office to 48 traditional rulers. One of the new rulers is the north east zonal chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Emmanuel Njuwa.
The 48 traditional rulers comprise some newly created offices while others were upgraded to the next level. Giving the breakdown of the institutions, the Permanent Secretary, Bureau for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Bello Yaro, said 38 of the chiefs are third class while 10 are second class.
In his speech, Governor Darius Ishaku urged the newly installed to promote peaceful coexistence among their subjects to check insecurity in the state.
According to him, the move was to consolidate and strengthen the traditional institution in the state and address the legitimate yearnings and aspirations of the people of the state.
“The challenge of insecurity made it possible to create these chiefdoms and upgrade the existing ones and you must ensure peace in your domains,” the governor said.
He explained further that the population growth of the state called for the urgent review of the traditional institutions to accommodate the needs of the population expansion.
He said his administration carefully carried out the exercise to give all ethnic nationalities in the state a sense of belonging. Earlier, Permanent Secretary, Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Bello Yero commended the courage, wisdom and determination of the governor for considering the yearnings of the people of the state.
Yero who said over 40 communities benefitted from the gesture called on the traditional rulers to reciprocate the gesture by ensuring peace in their domain for the good of the state.
Yero said the creation of the chiefdoms was a holistic approach in addressing the yearnings of Tarabans with regard to traditional institutions which will accord citizens the privilege to feel free and independently grow according to their traditional norms.
In his response the newly upgraded second class Chief of Mutum Biyu, Alhaji Mohammed Bose thanked the Governor for the gesture.
