5 killed, 3 injured in Enugu auto crash

No fewer than five people lost their lives on Tuesday evening when a truck lost control and ran into shops at Ogbede junction on Enugu – Abuja road in Igbo-Etiti, council area of Enugu state.
Blueprint gathered that the truck fully loaded with goods was said to be coming from the Northern part of the country, and heading to Onitsha, Anambra state.
An eyewitness told our correspondent that the accident would have been averted if the nation’s roads were in better condition.
He said the truck was attempting to avert potholes in the middle of the road, and lost control, veered off the road and ran into shops in the nearby market killing five people instantly.
A little girl of about seven years had her head severed in the incident.
He said: “So many lives have been lost along this road as a result of bad condition of the road. I think the government agencies that are responsible to repair the roads like federal road maintenance agency, and road safety should come to Ogbede junction to avoid more lives being lost especially as the Christmas celebration is around the corner.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ebere Amaraizu, when contacted on phone, said he had not received details of the incident.
Our correspondent reports that the injured was rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, while the deceased bodies had been taken to a mortuary in Nsukka town.
