5 killed in Niger banks robbery

At least five persons including two policemen have been reportedly killed in an armed robbery operation in two banks in Lapai town of Niger state.
The armed robbers were said to have carried out the operation at about 5pm and as they first attacked UBA on Suleja road beside Kobo Campus of the IBB University, Lapai, and thereafter shifted their operation to First Bank on Minna road before the main campus of the university.
Witnesses said the robbers killed two police securing the banks, and abducted the manager of First Bank, while still exchanging fire with the police who were drafted to quell the operation.
It was learnt that the operation lasted for one hour, and that the robbers were able to cart away some Ghana Must Go bags filled with money and spread some cash in the process.
It was further learnt that the robbers who entered the town through Lapai – Gulu road, however, left through Lapai- Paiko road as reinforced the joint team of Military and police chased after them.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state police command, SP Abigail Unaeze, confirmed the incident, adding that no arrest had been made.
She said the Commissioner of Police had already visited the area for an on-the- spot assessment, assuring that the hoodlums “will soon been apprehended.”
According to her, some of those injured were immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Bida, for further medical attention after receiving emergency medical assistance at a government hospital in Lapai.
