No fewer than 50,000 vulnerable children have been made orphans as a result of the Boko Haram insurgency in the north eastern states of the country.
This was made known by the Emir of Anka and chairman, Zamfara
state Council of Chiefs, Alhaji Attahiru Ahmed, yesterday, at the formal presentation of a documentary on the activities of the insurgents, organised by the Voice of America (VOA), in collaboration with the state Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, held in Gusau, the state capital.
The monarch described the insurgency as devastating as thousands of innocent people have been killed, maimed while thousands of others have been rendered homeless, with properties worth billions of naira also lost to the nefarious activities.
He described the Boko Haram movement as un-Islamic and inhuman, calling on authorities concerned to prosecute anyone found sponsoring the sect, either financially or physically, irrespective of his status or background.
“It clear that, those people who are sponsoring these terrorists are known and we are appealing to the federal government to take decisive action against them without fear or favor,” the monarch said.
The traditional ruler then called on governments at all levels as well as the well-to –do individuals to ensure that the children are adapted for them to have positive upbringing and be good citizens of the country.
In his remarks, Managing Editor of the Voice of America, Aliyu Mustafa Sokoto, said the aim of the presentation was to enlighten Nigerians and neighboring countries on the level of socio-economic damage done by the insurgency and to listen to their different views and observations that could assist the government and donor countries to bring succour to the victims.
