50 unclaimed corpses flood FMC Asaba

Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba has threatened to perform mass burial of all the abandoned corpses dumped at hospital mortuary.

The hospital management said it will embark on the mass burial of about 50 unclaimed corpses at the hospital morgue by the Oshimili south local government council.

It was gathered that the decision was prompted by the hospital resolve to decongest the 100 capacity morgue and to also pave way for internal depositors.

FMC source said that the indiscriminate dumping of corpses at the hospital morgue by the local council authority gives the hospital management sleepless nights.

The FMC management was said to have summoned representatives of the council to a meeting following the cordial relationship that existed between the two bodies but was deadlocked.

The option of a mass burial was considered by the hospital authority as all efforts to dialogue with the local government council on the way forward failed.

According to the source,  hospital management has sent several official letters and text messages to the local government, but were disregarded.

The management of the hospital is said to be particularly disturbed by the long silence of the local government authority on the issue inspite of all the polite approaches the hospital had made to address the issue.

The source said, “the local government council has kept mute on several requests by the hospital management, showing nonchalant attitude, hospital sources said.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital Dr. Victor Osaituma while reacting on the matter said several letters by the hospital management to the council to address the issue were ignored for inexplicable reasons.

“We are neighbors, we are friends and we shall remain friends even though they have being unfair to us at the hospital, he CMD said.

The chairman of the local government council Mr. Uche Osadebe declined comment on the issues raised against him through text message and  several calls put across to him.
