6 new training institutions to save billions for NIMASA in overseas training – DG

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) will save billions of naira spent in sending seafarers in training institutions overseas as the agency will soon commence training in its institutions in Nigeria.

Director General of NIMASA, Dr Bashir Jamoh, disclosed that with six training institutions located in the country’s six geo-political zones, NIMASA has the capacity to train the manpower needs of the maritime industry locally.

Dr. Jamoh spoke at the commissioning ceremony of the agency’s Search and Rescue Clinic in Apapa where he outlined policies put in place by administration that will have direct impact on Nigerians and help address unemployment and manpower development.

Last December 2022, the agency sent forth 235 Nigerians to India and Greece as batch B of the 435 young Nigerians to be trained as Licensed Deck and Engine Officers including Naval Architects under the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme, (NSDP).

The NIMASA DG, while giving a breakdown of the number of seafarer enrolment, graduates and those already employed had said “It is important to note that from inception to 2020, the programme has enrolled 2,041 students, while 892 are now licensed deck and engine officers including Naval Architects, the rest are in their final stage of the programme.”
