6 remanded for assaulting IBEDC officials

Ilesa Magistrates’ Court in Osun state has ordered that six men be remanded in prison for allegedly assaulting officials of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

The Magistrate, Ishola Omisade, did not take the plea of Olaniran Idowu, 61;Opebiyi Oluwaseyi, 32; Abayomi Korede, 25;Ariyo Mayowa, 21; Abe Wasiu, 23 and Ayeni Ebenezer, 20.

Magistrtae Omisade ordered the police to return the case file to the Directorate of Public Prosecution for advice.

Omisade the case until April 16.

The six men were charged with alleged armed robbery and assault.

The Prosecution Counsel, Insp Olookooba Sulaiman, told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 14 around 8. 30 a.m at the IBEDC office, Isare area, Ilesa.

Sulaiman said the accused conspired among themselves to commit felony to wit: armed robbery.

He added that the accused armed themselves with guns, cutlass and other dangerous weapons and dispossessed the IBEDC officials of their mobile phones and other valuables.

Sulaiman said the accused conspired among themselves to commit felony to wit: malicious damage, assault occasioning harm, unlawful assembly, rioting and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

He said  the offence contravened Sections: 1 (1), (2), (a), (b) and 6 (b) of the Robbery & Firearms (Special Provisions) Act Cap R11, Vol 14, Laws of Federation, 2004.

The prosecutor added that the offence also contravened Sections 69, 70, 71, 76, 81, 355, 451 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

The Defence Counsel, Mr Femi Fafowora, appealed to court to discharged count one against the accused, saying the name of the complainant was not clearly stated.

Fafowora pleaded further that the name “IBEDC official” is not known in law, adding that the accused had been in prison custody since March 19 which was against law.
