60 persons escape death as hotel collapse in Abakiliki

Over 60 people Wednesday night escaped death in Abakaliki ,the Ebonyi state capital as a popular hotel, Metro View Hotels and suit collapsed.

Pillars of some particular wing of the Hotels Blueprint learnt was having crack and later collapsed at about 7:30pm when engineers engaged to renovate the building were still at work.

The hotel located close to Presco campus of College of health Science of Ebonyi state University, Abakaliki is a two story twin building housing about 24 rooms and 2 suites. But the wing that collapsed had about 10 rooms.

Blueprint also gathered that guest at the hotel were relocated to a nearby hotel(Pinnacle Hotels) before the collapse.

A member of the hotel management Autsin Orji who spoke to journalists on behalf of the hotel on Thursday when the Special Adviser to Governor David Umahi on capital territory, Chief Ejem Okoro visited the scene said they had noticed a crack on some of the pillars holding the building and they immediately cordoned off the side of building and started renovations, adding that it was in the process of the renovation that the building collapsed.

Orji said those who lodged in the hotel were outside the building for a seminar when the incident happened, stressing that no life was lost.

However, Chief Okoro, said the hotel would remain sealed pending investigation by the government.
