61 Dead, 5000 affected as Borno declares cholera outbreak under control

The Borno State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Haruna Mshelia has declared that the outbreak of Cholera in Borno state  is ‘over’ with the intervention of World Health Organisation  (WHO) and other agencies to control the outbreak of the  cholera few months ago at Muna  IDPs camp in Maiduguri.
He also disclosed that 5000 Cholera cases and 61 deaths were recorded in 6 LGAs of the state, namely, MMC, Jere, Dikwa, Monguno, Mafa and Guzamala LGAs.
Dr. Mshelia who was represented by the Ministry of Health Director of Emergency Medical Response and Humanitarian Services, Dr. Mohammed Aminu said that the success of managing and controlling the outbreak of cholera was as a result of the multi sectoral strategies adopted and strong partnership with the WHO in coordinating other implementing partners to support the state in closing identified gaps in surveillance , risk communication, water and environment among others.
He added that over 900,000 people were vaccinated during the exercise across the affected LGAs and many methods were adopted to control the environment and treatments of water and environment of the affected LGAs.
According to him, the state was now prepared and equipped to prevent and respond even better in the event of another outbreak while assuring that the state will begin to document and control strategies, management of cases and provide technical support to the MOH staff on ground.
The Health Commissioner further maintained that the state will continue to educate and enlighten the people on these strategies to avert future reoccurrence  while appealing to the UN agencies and other partners to continue to support and assist the state health system, support the government and other agencies involved in providing improved healthcare delivery services for the people of the state especially, the IDPs.
He also appreciated the role okayed by WHO, UNICEF, MSF, FHI 360, MDM, ALIMA and others in case management while recognizing the various roles played by FMOH, NCDC and  NPHCDA in disrupting the outbreak and collaboration of the state MOH staff and other state agencies like SOHCDA, BOSEPA, RUWASA, BOSG and people if the state.
