75th anniversary: UN to intervene on poverty eradication in 2021

In celebration of its 75th anniversary on October 24, the United Nations has revealed plans to intervene in poverty eradication in 2021.

Speaking on Sunday in Abuja during the inauguration of members of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UNECOSOC), Social Council Secretariat (SCS) and Social Development Committee (SDC), the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UNESC), Africa Full Chairman, Professor Nathan Tor Luga, said apart from poverty eradication, the UN will also engage in the education of Nigerians in order to combat youth restiveness.

He said: “24th October every year is celebrated as the anniversary of the United Nations. In celebrating the 75th anniversary in Nigeria, we carried out the inauguration of different committee members. The UN has contributed a lot to the development of Nigeria. Our organisation is under the special consultative committee of ECOSOC. As you know, the UN has six organs, so we belong to the third organ.

“We just inaugurated the Nigerian Secretariat of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UNESC), the Social Advisory and Social Development Committee. The organisation’s major role is the eradication of poverty and also overseeing human rights activities in Nigeria. After the inauguration, the team will go to work in Africa.

“There is a project in 2021 for Nigerians. There is going to be serious preparation for the project in 2021. The major project is the eradication of poverty. Then we will also undertake education because if people are well educated, we will not be having a lot of social vices, especially the ongoing protests. Therefore, we will undertake eradication of poverty, education and agricultural development.”

Also speaking, the newly inaugurated Director Project and Programmes UNESC, Mr. Hendricks Omale, said the inauguration will motivate him to work harder for the betterment of humanity.

“I have been working hard for the development of Nigeria for many years. However, this special recognition by the UN will act as motivation for us to perform better. We are putting plans in place to visit several communities. We will visit vulnerable communities for sensitisation and a sense of belonging so that they can have a change of mindset,” he said.
