77% Nigerians without cash income in 2017 – Foundation

Afrobarometer working with CLEEN Foundation and Practical Sampling International, has revealed in a recent survey that about 51 percent Nigerians are without food, 48 percent without medical care, 47 percent without cooking fuel, and 77 percent are without a cash income.

In a press statement issued by senior communication and campaign officer for the foundation, Audu Liberty Oseni, yesterday in Abuja explained that the survey was conducted in the language of the respondent’s choice with nationally representative samples in 2017.

According to him, the survey released earlier this year further revealed that more than one-third of Nigerians were without the basic necessities of life in 2017, and many say that obtaining public services was difficult, took “a long time,” and required payment of a bribe.

“Findings from the survey also showed, 60 percent of Nigerians believe the state economy is bad while 57 percent Nigerians are living in a good condition.

“Despite the perceived challenge, 82 percent Nigerians believe that the economy will improve within the 12 months period.

“When, asked if the state is fighting corruption, 59 percent Nigerians rated the anti-graft war to be fair, although 33 percent rated the state management of the economy to be bad. Twenty five percent Nigerians rated the standard of living to be very poor.

He further explained that 47 percent of Nigeria’s population still live in poverty while eight out of 10 Nigerians live on less than $2 a day, according to the World Poverty Clock and the African Development Bank Group.

Liberty explained that Afrobarometer is a pan-African, non-partisan research network that conducts public attitude surveys on democracy, governance, economic conditions, and related issues across more than 35 countries in Africa.
