9th Senate: 70 Senators sponsored 191 bills in 3 months

….As 37 others struggle to join fray 

  

A total of 191 bills were sponsored on the floor of the Senate between October and December in 2019.

Records of bills’ sponsorship, consideration and passage in the 9th snate exclusively obtained by our correspondent indicated that three out of the sponsored bills were executive bills while the remaining 189 were private member bills separately sponsored by 70 out of the 109 senators who are presently 107 due to the death of Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu ( APC Imo north) and incarceration of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu ( APC Abia north).

The three executive bills considered and passed by the 9th Senate within the period were the N10.594trillion 2020 Appropriation bill, the 2019 Finance Bill and the N278.355billion 2020 Appropriation bill for the Federal Capital Territory ( FCT, Abuja).

Aside the three executive bills already considered and passed within the stated period, four out of the 189 private member bills, were also passed for third reading one of which has been assented to  by President Muhamnadu Buhari .

The one assented to by President Buhari after its passage by both chambers of the 9th National Assembly ,  was  the Deep Off-shore and Inland Basin Production Sharing Contracts Act CAP D3 LFN 2004 (Amendment ) Bill 2019.

While Senators like late Benjamin Uwajumogu who joined the 9th Senate late due to electoral litigation,   Biodun Olujimi (PDP Ekiti South) and  Smart Adeyemi ( APC Kogi west) , were among the 70 senators behind the 189 bills on individual basis, most of the 37 Senators yet to sponsor a bill , started with the 9th upper legislative chamber at inauguration  Tuesday, 11th June, 2019.
