AAUA, NAWOJ condemn randy soldier for ‘raping’ student

The authorities of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA) Ondo state, has  condemned the alleged sexual assault on one of its students by one of the soldiers stationed at a check point between Akungba Akoko and Ikare Akoko areas of the institution.

In a letter signed by Acting Registrar of the institution, Mr. Opeoluwa Akinfemiwa, said “the university, after its preliminary investigation, noted with concern and amazement that a soldier of the Federal Republic Nigeria, whose duty, among others, is to protect lives of its citizens can turn round to exhibit such reprobate tendencies.

“The university, while commending the swift action taken so far by the Brigade Commander on this inhuman and brazen assault on a defenceless and innocent student, calls on the authorities of the Nigerian Army to deal decisively with the perpetrator(s) of the act against humanity,” he noted.

The university authority informed that although they are not unaware of the security situation in the country, however, strongly requested that the checkpoint that is a few kilometres to the institution be dismantled and the soldiers moved to between Oba-Akoko and Ose where kidnappings and robberies occur, almost, on a daily basis.

The university has however called for calm and assured students that the authority would continue to ensure that adequate security measures are put in place to enable them continue to pursue their academic activities without fear or molestation from any quarter.

Also, the Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) state  chapter has charged the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai to immediately dismiss the rapist soldiers who gang-raped the university’s 300 level student.

NAWOJ chairperson, Mrs Doris Olumoko, said the dismissal of the rapists become necessary as it will serve as a measure of flushing out bad elements from the military like the security personnel who are supposed to protect the citizenry but turned around to be the ones sexually assaulting them and creating fears in their mind.

In her words, Okumoko said: “The dismissal of the rapist soldiers become necessary as it will serve as a measure of flushing out bad elements from the Military like the security personnel who are supposed to protect the citizenry but turned around to be the ones sexually assaulting them and creating fears in their minds”.
