Abduljabar: Rights group vows to defend cleric

Following the controversy that erupted in Kano over what the state government described as “inciting religious comments” credited to Sheikh Abduljabar Nasir Kabara which led to the banning of his Islamic preaching, the executive director (North), International Human Rights Today Initiative, Barrister Said bn Usman, has said the group was determined to fight for the cleric’s fundamental rights.

Stated this Friday, wondering why the Islamic scholar should be “unjustifiably vilified” for what was perceived by the state government as derogatory and inciting comments.

He said the group had launched a thorough investigation into the alleged incitement saga and discovered that the Islamic scholar was innocent and had no skeleton in his cupboard.

“We have thoroughly investigated the matter and found no inkling of inflaming passion in the name of derogatory Islamic preaching. We are all out to defend him in the name of restoring his fundamental human rights which we believe was trampled upon in the absence of incontrovertible evidence to prove such an allegation.

“On our part, we shall continue to monitor the unfolding event with keen interest and seriousness. What we want from the state government is the immediate re-opening of his mosque and other places of conducting religious activities sealed in the wake of the saga. If that is not done as we are seeking, we will not hesitate to take the next legal line of action,” he said.
