Abia North: Ikoku hails Supreme Court judgement on APC senatorial contest

A political analyst and member of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Mrs Mary Ikoku, has hailed Supreme Court judgement which affirmed Mr. Samuel Onuigbo as the All Progressives Congress (APC) Abia North senatorial candidate.

The court had on Friday January 27, 2023, in a judgment delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim, dismissed the appeal filed by Mr. Emeka Atuma and declared Onuigbo as the validly elected candidate of the party.

Reacting to the judgement, Ikoku in an interview with Arise News Television described the judgement as one which every man and woman of conscience would be very proud of.

“For some of us who came to this political system with a hope of democratic idea, we have been watching to see what the supreme court judgment will be and honestly I will say that, the Supreme Court delivered true justice. When you say the court is a hope of a common man, that is what was established in the case of Atuma and Sam Onuigbo.

“For me, I think it’s a good judgement and for our party. I don’t speak for the party in Abia state, I am speaking as an individual who has come into politics and as a decent Nigerian and somebody who has character competent and shared values where things are done right.

“Sometimes there may be a decision between some people in the party who had made their own decisions, no matter how that calculation come about. Some of us do not know the workings but Sam Onuigbo’s name did not make the list of Senate in Abia state, that’s shocking to us then…

“APC as a party put out a notice and said these are the party guidelines, and said everyone of you go down to your state, run an election following these guidelines, and the party warn at that time that we don not want a repeat of what happened in Zamfara and Rivers state in the last election. Some of us went down to our state and some people were doing all manner of things…

“…What has been delivered is a judgement that give people like us that hope, a kind of hope to realise that you can actually get a justice when things are not done right. Sometimes it may just be one or two people doing these mathematics and arithmetic on everybody,” she said.

She urged Atuma to accept the apex court decision and as well join hands with the party at the coming elections.

“Emeka Atuma is not going to be a bitter person, he’s a great sportsman and I know he will accept this in kind heart, because he has been doing things for the party, he’s trying to hold the party together, and that’s something I like about him, he should continue in that spirit for the collective success of our party,” she said.
