ABU senior staff pull out of SSANU strike

The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) chapter of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has pulled out of the industrial action embarked on by the union nationwide since December last.
The senior staff who held its congress in the union secretariat at the main campus of the university on Tuesday directed all its members to resume work without further delay.
ABU chapter union’s chairman, Ilyas Abdulrauf Bello, told journalists after rising from their congress that the strike had lost direction and focus, hence the decision of the chapter’s congress to pull out and go back to duty.
“The union embarked on the strike on December 4, 2017. This is the fourth month and by now, the strike has lost direction and focus. The government is not inviting the union, most universities are in session, and academic activities are in progress. And so, we felt the best we could do is to call on our members to resume work immediately.
“This idea was muted by the congress and it was unanimously adopted that SSANU, ABU chapter resume work with immediate effect,” Bello said.
He lamented that continuing with the strike while academic activities are going on smoothly and the striking workers are getting their salaries regularly was meaningless.
SSANU members were angered by the purported expulsion of their chapter chairman from the national body and resolved that the letter of expulsion issued to their chairman was null, void and of no effect.
The association explained that the constitution of the union was not followed in the purported expulsion, adding that the national body of the union does not have power to expel any official or member of the local chapter.
The chairman also said that the congress of the ABU chapter also expelled some erring members upon their failure to appear before its disciplinary committee after their initial suspension.
