Abuja agog as Taekwondo Athletes, coaches troop in for National trials, referees end workshop

Abuja, Nigeria’s capital is currently bubbling with the arrival of no fewer than 120 Athletes, who are already registered for 2019 National Taekwondo Trials scheduled between June 26 and 29 June, 2019.

The competition meant to access Athletes from all over the country will officials pick in-form ones to upcoming 2019 African Games and 2020 Olympics qualifiers.

The trials are taking place after a three-day workshop organised by the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF) for dozens of referees inside MKO Abiola stadium.

Some of the male and female categories which Athletes are expected to do battle include -54kg, -80kg, -87kg, -46kg, -49kg, -53kg-73kg, among others

A visit to one of the biggest sporting centres in Africa indicates the readiness of Athletes who were seen weighing-in and checking out their fight time, starting from Wednesday morning.

The officials of NTF who were at hand to attend to both Athletes and coaches as well as other contingents from various states throughout Tuesday, had hectic period since last week in an effort to guarantee hitch-free competition, capable of meeting World Taekwondo (WT) standards.

One of the competing Athletes, Peter Ituku, who was already optimistic of the outcome of the competition said, “I can wait to get on the mart and engage my opponents. It’s all about convincing those in charge that we can be trusted to do Nigeria proud in any future international competition.”

NTF President, Mrs Elizabeth Margret Binga, a certified high grade WT referee who also drilled Nigerian referees between June 21 and 24 affirmed that all is now set for the trials.

She however enjoined Athletes, coaches and all officials to exhibit good conduct throughout the duration of the competition.

Chairman of NTF Technical committee Alhaji Sani Lawal and Technical Director Engr. Chika Chukwumerije in their separate remarks assured that avoidable hitches have been addressed for successful competition
