Abuja hospital clears air on kidney transplant controversy

Alliance Hospital and Service Limited Friday debunked an alleged underaged kidney harvesting story making the rounds on social media.

While clearing the air at a Press briefing, the hospital management did not only condemn the trending video, they have also threatened a legal suit against the young man who posted the video.

They have therefore urged Nigerians to disregard the allegation; saying in line with its professional ethics and legal procedure, the hospital received a donated kidney from an 18 years old and had stated the true position at the Human Rights Radio and Television before a certified arbitrator.

In the said video, a young man alleged that Alliance Hospital harvested a kidney from a 17 years old boy and sold it, threatening to take the matter up.

The twist

On the 24th November, 2022, we got an invitation from the Human Rights Radio and Television in Abuja concerning a case of breach of promise leveled against the hospital.

They alleged that the patient is 17 years old and that the recipient is not a biological relative of the donor.

They claimed that there has been an intermediary person (Unknown to the hospital) who contacted the donor on behalf of the recipient to donate his kidney for a financial consideration of N2.8 million and a promise to relocate him abroad.

It turned out that the intermediary person did not give the donor any amount of money as promised and in a turn of events, the family now asked the hospital which has no prior knowledge of any deal between them to pay the family N2.8million.

But while deflating the claims, the Chief Consultant Surgeon/Medical Director, Dr. Otabor Christopher confirmed that an 18 years old man donated a kidney to his uncle and the operation was carried out in the last batch of kidney transplant that was carried out at the hospital.

According to him, having met the administrative and legal procedure including swearing to an affidavit via documentation, and after a positive compatibility and surgery fitness test was carried out, the hospital proceeded with the surgery which turned out to be successful.

Otabor told newsmen that after the operation, both the donor and patient were discharged without any complications.

“The donor duly sworn to an affidavit stating that he was born on the 14th September, 2004 and was 18 years old and 2 months at the time of the surgery.

“Without any financial inducement, cohesion or intimidation from any quarters, the boy stated that the recipient is his uncle, while the patient also deposed to an affidavit stating the donor is his nephew,” Otabor stated further.
