Abuse of antibiotics can cause virginal odour – Gynaecologist

A gynaecologist, Dr Prosper Igboeli, yesterday advised women against abuse of antibiotics, saying it could cause virginal odour.
Igboeli, Managing Director, M&M Fertility Centre, Karshi, Abuja, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
“It is actually the abuse of antibiotics that causes some of these things. Normal vaginal discharge is usually white.
“When a woman notices yellow or green discharge, it means the beginning of an infectious process, and this is usually associated with offensive or unpleasant odour, ’’ he said.
Igboeli said after using antibiotics, some women experience over-growth of yeast which, he described as yeast infection.
Igboeli said the over-growth of yeast was because the antibiotic had destroyed the bacteria that stabilises the environment of the vagina.
He said it was natural for every matured woman to experience small amount of vaginal discharge, adding that the vaginal wall secretes some discharge containing glycogen (sugar).
He said that the discharge were the main source of acid that immobilises the sperm during sexual intercourse.
He said that offensive odour could be embarrassing to women, especially during intimacy, adding that poor hygiene of the vagina could also cause vaginal odour.
Igboeli said vaginal discharge with offensive odour could discourage husbands from engaging in sexual activities with their wives.
“My advice to women is that they should constantly keep themselves clean and reserved, and quickly consult a doctor when they suspect abnormal discharge,’’ he said.
Igboeli said that abuse of antibiotics could be prevented by avoiding self-medication and strict adherence to medical prescriptions. (NAN)
