Access Bank eyes another acquisition in Nigeria

Access Bank Plc which recently concluded acquisition of a majority stake in South Africa’s, Grobank Limited, has again shown interest in the acquisition of Union Bank and other African assets of Atlas Mara Group, a Pan-African banking group.

The Nigerian creditor which has also acquired African Banking Corporation through Access Bank Mozambique, Transnational Bank in Kenya and Cavmont Bank Limited in Zambia, is still keeping negotiations under wraps, it was gathered.

Zenith Bank Plc, according to reliable sources is also interested, so are other African rivals like Morocco’s Attijariwafa Bank as the London-listed Atlas Mara Group received a number of offers for its 49.97 percent stake in Union Bank of Nigeria Plc.

Middle Eastern banks and private equity suitors have also shown interest as some of the potential buyers have indicated they may acquire all of Atlas Mara’s remaining assets in Africa, which would include its Zimbabwe unit.
