Activists dismiss corruption, nepotism allegations against CBN

A front line anti corruption and human rights group, Good Governance Africa, has dismissed allegations of corruption and favouritism from some quarters against the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) leadership.

Addressing journalists at a press conference in Makurdi, Benue state capital, the executive secretary of the group Rev Solomon Semaka revealed how the organisation compiled series of malicious allegations against the CBN leadership and undertook an independent investigation for nine months.

“Ironically, our findings have exposed the fact that the CBN under the current leadership is about the most credible agency under the current administration.
In terms of internal systems, policies and procedures as well as in terms of resilience, the CBN stands tall on all indices.

“As an organisation that has taken public officials to task on corruption, we set out to expose the CBN leadership if we found them wanting on any front,” he said

The group further said, beyond their expectations, the CBN has institutionalised accountability and transparency in their day to day administration.

It said the move has virtually abolished dark activities within the bank and her subsidiaries.

Responding to journalists on why the organisation had to swear to affidavit in a bid to pass a vote of confidence on the apex bank, Rev Semaka said extraordinary performance demands extraordinary commendation.

“You know the implications of swearing to an affidavit under oath, in defence of a third party. This confirms that we have done a thorough and independent investigation and we can vouch for the current CBN leadership particularly under the circumstances,” he said.

“We urge Nigerians to offer moral support to the CBN leadership so as to sustain the resilience through the hard times.”
