Adamawa, Borno, Yobe govts: Boko Haram will take over North-east

Six days after Boko Haram insurgents took over the commercial border town of Mubi, northern part of Adamawa, the governments of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states have expressed fears that if the federal government failed to step up efforts Boko Haram would capture the entire North-east.

The states declared this in the wake of rising occupation of more towns and villages by Boko Haram insurgents, adding that unless the federal government stepped up measures, the North East Zone “will soon fall under Boko Haram.”
The governors of the affected states said it seemed there was no seriousness in the fight against the insurgents.
Deputy Governor of Borno state, Zanna Umar Mustapha, who spoke to reporters in Yola, yesterday, said with the effrontery of the insurgents, “very soon the three north eastern states will become history.”

He said: “If the federal government will not add extra efforts, in the next three months, the three North-east states will not be in existence. The federal government has tried its best, but their best is not enough because rather than going after the insurgents, it is the insurgents that are going after us.
“It is a big crime that the criminals are better equipped and they are just few Kilometers from Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.”

The deputy governor, who was in Adamawa to see thousands of Borno indigenes that were forced to leave their state following Boko Haram attacks, noted that the continuous occupation of more towns by the insurgents had vindicated the statement earlier made by his boss that the insurgents were in possession of superior weapons which many were not happy with.

He said already 13 local governments in Borno, four in Adamawa and others in Yobe are under the control of Boko Haram insurgence, adding that from intelligence reports if the federal government did not step up measures the fall of the three states would only be a matter of days or weeks.
Mustapha said to have been entered between the federal government and the insurgents.
He said: “We are yet to believe that there cease fire because the first day after the said announcement was made, over 30 people were in Borno state, and before you know they continue with their rampage in Adamawa, Gombe and many other places.”
