ADB trains Kaduna livestock farmers on stover production

In its bid to boost livestock farming in Nigeria, African Development
Bank (ADB) in collaboration with its sister organizations has trained
livestock farmers on    Sorghum stover processing and utilization and
minerals mix as livestock feeds under Technologies for African
Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) Sorghum/Millet compact.

Our Correspondent reports that the participants were drawn from
Makarfi, Kubau and Ikara local government areas of Kaduna state.

It is also reported that the collaborators include African Development
Fund (ADF), Centre for Dryland Agriculture, Bayero University, Kano
and Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello
University, Zaria and National Agricultural Research, Extension and
liaison service, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

In his presentation at the formal opening of the training held in
Ikara, the Coordinator of the project, Professor Boniface David
Kashina of Crop Protection Department, Institute for Agricultural
Research, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria said the project was aimed at
improving food and security, sustain use of improved variety of GAPS,
increase farmers income and create jobs, reduce post-harvest losses
and enhance crop-livestock.

Professor Kashina pointed out that the training would avail the
participants with knowledge on how to create enabling environment to
increase production, set up strong investment platform, and promote
service provider enterprises among others as benefits

“We want to provide high-yielding, market preferred, Striga and
diseases resistant varieties and promote high-increasing technologies
as well as promote Micro-Dosing Fertilizer application technology,” he
said.

The researcher explained that the technology would in no small way
assist in arresting herders/farmers clash in the country and it would
also boost the livestock farmers’ income.

Speaking with Blueprint shortly after the training, a participant,
Mallam Shehu Musa Ardo said innovation was a welcome development as it
would help in reducing the incessant herders migration from location
to the other by curbing the clash as their cattle would have enough
feed with small amount of money, hence, there would be no need for
them to be migrating.

He urged the herders to embrace the innovation brought to their
doorstep in order to increase livestock production and provide meat
security in the interest of the country.

Mallam Ardo called on governments to continue to bring more
innovations that would assist in solving herders’ problem.
