2017 World Silver medallist, Odunayo Adekuoroye on Friday in Gold Coast, Australia became the first Nigerian female wrestler to win the first gold medal in the sport. She was the defending champion. She has now won it two consecutive times at the Commonwealth Games.
Adekuoroye defeated India’s Pooja Dhanda 7-5 points in the women’s 57kg wrestling freestyle event, as she successfully defended her medal won at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The four time-African champion avenged her defeat in the hands of Dhanda at the 2017 Pro Wrestling League in India.
2014 bronze medalist, Blessing Oborududu corrected her errors in the last Commonwealth Games to defeat Canada’s Danielle Lappage in the women’s 68kg wrestling freestyle event.
The eight-time Africa champion came from behind to defeat her Canadian counterpart on points (4-3), to claim another gold for Nigeria. In the freestyle male, Captain Amas Daniel won his bronze medal match against Canada’s Vincent De Marinis 4-4 on points. This is Amas Daniel’s second bronze medal at a Commonwealth Games.
Meanwhile, Soso Tamarau lost his bronze medal match to Cyprus Alexios Kaouslidis 2-1, while South Africa’s Martins Erasmus won the gold medal.
Nigeria Wrestling team have so far won two gold, one silver and three bronze.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Oluwatobiloba Amusan has won the gold medal of the women’s 100m hurdles. Two Jamaicans, Danielle Williams and Yanique Thompson got the silver and bronze medals.
Her compatriot, Grace Ayemoba however couldn’t make the final finishing 5th in 13.59 seconds in heat 2 of the 100m hurdles.
Meanwhile in the men’s discus, Stephen Mozia was at his best in qualification B as he made it to the final. Mozia threw a season’s best 59.95m to place 4th and qualify for the final on Friday.
Nigeria’s Faith Obazuaye is through to the semi-finals of the women’s TT6-10 singles following her 3-0 (11-7, 11-5, 11-9) win over Canada’s Stephanie in Group 2. Obazuaye moves to the last four winning all three Group games.
Temitope Ogunsanya has crashed out of the men’s TT6-10 after losing all three games. Ogunsanya lost to England’s Ross Wilson 0-3 ( 2-11, 3-11, 3-11) in group 5.
In the men’s singles round of 16 table tennis event, Aruna Quadri defeated Singapore’s Xue Jie Pang 4-1. Quadri lost game two, 8-11 but came back stronger to win the last three games though forced a 12-10 win in game 5 to eventually progress (11-5, 8-11,11-3,11-3,12-10) to the last eight.
Meanwhile, Segun Toriola retired from his round of 16 clash against India’s Sathiyan Gnanasekaran. The veteran retired due to a knee injury at 7-11, 5-9 against the Indian.
However, Toriola recovered early enough to partner Quadri in the men’s doubles. The Nigerian pair beat Javen/Leong Chee Feng of Malaysia 3-1 (11-7,9-11,11-8, 11-5) to qualify for the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles.
