The Deputy Senate President, Obarisi Ovie Omo-Agege, has said that $trillion could be added to the Gross Domestic Profit (GDP) in the year 2025 by advancing women equality.
He said this is because women are the backbone of global economy as they engage more in entrepreneurship.
He noted this on Tuesday in Abuja at the inauguration of the new executives of the Nigerian Association of Women Enterprenuers (NAWE) with theme : “Unleashing Nigeria Women Entrepreneur into a connected economy”.
According to him, entrepreneurship is important for any economic drive of any nation and women who are mostly entrepreneurs are also risk takers and bedrock of any society.
He said women globally are moving into a growing space and they promote gender economy in the workforce.
Also, the Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment , Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo said the numerical strength which is statistically Nigeria population, reviewed that women constitute 49.3percent of the population .
He said this figure is significant and its effect cannot be downplayed in the matter of economic growth and development nexus in Nigeria .
The minister assured of it mainstream gender issues in her mandate of industrial development, attraction of investment and trade facilitation as well as promotion of entrepreneurship.
Also, the newly inaugurated President of NAWE, Chief Barr, Vera Ndanusa said a lot of women run and own their own businesses and are doing well for themselves , even better than some men.
She expressed concern that the average Nigerian woman is seen as an available object for prostitution, forced marriages, streets hawking, instrument of wide range trafficking and a misfit in the society.
She further said thus, the purported irrelevance associated with the status of women in the society has merely reduced an average woman to an inferior commodity .
