All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for revitalising the agricultural sector through the various intervention programmes aimed at improving food security in the country.
The body made this commendation in a communiqué at the end of its North east zonal meeting in Gombe.
The communiqué, signed by its National Vice Chairman, Auwal Tukur and issued to pressmen yesterday in Gombe, commended the role played by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in the provision of financial support, especially through its Anchor Borrowers scheme towards the production of crops such as rice, tomatoes, wheat, cassava and maize, which it described as commendable.
The association, however, called for early release of loans and other agricultural inputs at the inception of farming activities, “as this would make effective utilisation of such funds and to be able to pay back on time.
“The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) also decries the difficulty faced by their members in accessing insurance cover as a result of stringent bureaucratic bottlenecks,” the communiqué added.
The farmers lamented that, some of the requirements for accessing insurance were also very difficult for members of the association, and asked the federal government to intervene.
