Ex- Super Eagles fullback and coach, Austin Eguavoen has described the recent lacklustre performance by the team as a generational change, which would soon be over, noting that the team would still pick one of the tickets for the 2015 African Cup of Nations.
Speaking in Kaduna after leading Gombe United FC to a 3-0 defeat in the hands of home side, Kaduna United FC, Eguavon said the current struggles of the team would some come to an end as he expect the Coach Stephen Keshi led team to bounce back and qualify for Morocco 2015.
According to the member of the Super Eagles team that won the 1994 African Cup of Nations in Tunisia and also participated in the 1994 World Cup in USA, “In 1994 we have a very solid team and each department of the team is very solid, but now we are struggling, but hopefully we will bounce back.”
Eguavon who played in the right back wing during his playing days says Efe Ambrose is not doing badly in that position, but need to be mindful of his defensive duties rather than being too offensive. “Efe Ambrose is more of an offensive player than a defensive player, he has to know that his primary assignment is to defend.”
Meanwhile, the coach has refused to blame Gombe United FC’s 3-0 defeat in matchday 29 of Nigeria Premier League in Kaduna on goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim.
Eguavon said Chigozie had an off day, which led to the early goal he conceded, adding that the fact that he conceded cheap goal does not make him a bad goalkeeper, as he had saved the team from defeat on several occasions.
He said if the other players did their job well, the ball will not have come to Chigozie and he would not have been in a position to concede the goal, while affirming that Chigozie still remain the club’s number one choice and will bounce back with better performances.
