AFCON: CAF falls apart with Supersport, terminates contract

Followers of Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON matches may no longer watch their various countries tackle each other as the 2021 qualifiers gets underway next week.

This, we gathered, is because SupersportsTV which had broadcast right with CAF for AFCON matches has suspended telecasting matches until further notice.

The suspension was sequel to CAF’s decision to terminate over a billion dollar contract it entered into with Lagardere Sports

SuperSport have a $130m TV contract with CAF.

According to Osasu Obayiuwana who is an insider in the contract dispute between CAF and Lagardere Sports, there will be no AFCON qualifiers or CAF club games, (on Supersport) as long as CAF’s dispute with Largardere Sports lasts.

He said, “@SuperSportTV will no longer show any @CAF_Online matches – NO AFCON qualifiers or CAF club games, as long as CAF’s dispute with LAGARDERE SPORTS is unresolved. SuperSport have a $130m TV contract with CAF. African football fans are the collateral damage.

“For fans of football who think that football politics and governance do not have a direct impact on their lives, this ? is a lesson for you, to realise that @CAF_Online’s decisions, for good or for bad, have a telling impact.”
