AFCON qualifier: Sports Minister apologises to Nigerians

Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dare, has apologized to Nigerians, particularly soccer loving fans over the abysmal performance of Nigeria Super Eagles in the recent two legged AFCON qualifiers match against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone.

The Minister who was speaking to Sports Journalists in Minna, Niger state capital said everyone football follower in Nigeria expected a better result from the two encounters, but that in every sports and football in particular, there are some unpredictable outcomes.

He said they would sit back and make some reviews “because when you put your fate in some peoples’ hands you expects some returns and if you didn’t get the return you desired, you have the right to make a review and take very critical and crucial decision.

“My point is we are going to sit back, we are going to review what has happened. We would review the entire team, we would look at the players to see whether they are qualified or not, whether they are ready for the team. We would also look at the Technical Adviser, we would also look at the entire people involved in football administration and the Super Eagles,” Dare said.

Mr. Dare also said that as long as the Super Eagles sing Nigeria’s National anthem, wear Nigeria’s colour and represent about 200 million Nigerians and the sovereignty of Nigeria, there is bound to be some intervention at some points from his own end, and that it should not be misconstrued as interference but a partnership.

He added that no one was happy about what happened against Sierra Leone.
