Afikpo youths sensitized against electoral violence

Youths of Amangballa, a community in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, have been advised against involvement in cultism, drug abuse, among others.

They have also been admonished to steer clear of  electoral violence in the 2019 general elections, as well as to avoid other social ills that may pose dangers to the community in particular and society in general.

Addressing the more than two hundred youths Sunday, a legal practitioner, Barrister Bright Uche, said that the youths should instead focus on skills acquisition and development; in order to better their lives, “as an idle person is a willing tool to the devil”.

In an exclusive chat with Blueprint, the Abuja-based lawyer said that the sensitization exercise was coming at the right time, in view of the fact that electioneering campaigns were going on across the state and that politicians induce idle youths with money to engage in electoral violence.

He said that, were the youths gainfully employed, many of them would not have time for cult-related activities and drug abuse, but would be engaged in making money; using one skill or another.

He said: “It grieves me anytime I come back home to see many youths idling away, instead of acquiring skills and making money through their skills. As a youth, you have your life ahead of you. You should create employment, acquire education, shun cultism, stop dealing in hard drugs and other social vices. Education is the key. Education paves the way to a successful life. Skills acquisition is the new deal.

“As a youth, you should acquire and get serious with your skills. You should shun cultism, dealing in illegal drugs in our community and other social vices. When you are busy making money, no politician will ask you to snatch ballot box for him or to be his thug. When you are your own boss, no politician will induce you with money to cause electoral violence.”
