African Court begins 54thordinary session

The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights has commenced its54th Ordinary Session sitting at its Arusha headquarters, in Tanzania.

The session, a biennial event, brings together the Chief Justices and the Presidents of Constitutional Courts of the AU Member States.

The session was institutionalised by the African Union.  

According to a press release made available toBlueprint from Arusha, the judges are expected to, among other duties, examine over 15 applications and at least six judgments before it.

The statement reads: “The judges are expected to examine over 15 applications and six judgment before it.

“It is also expected to render before it all the judgment on or before September 27, 2019.

Furthermore, “The Session is also expected to review the preparations for the Fourth African Judicial Dialogue slated for October in Kampala, Uganda, under the theme:‘’Tackling Contemporary Human Rights Issues: The Role of the Judiciary in Africa’’. 

Progress on the First International Court Forum on Human Rights to be held from 4 to 5 November in Zanzibar would also come under discussion,” the statement added.

The Court which meets four times a year in ordinary session and extra-ordinary session, is composed of eleven Judges, nationals of Member States of the African Union elected in their individual capacity.
