Again, ADP boss, Yabagi makes case for e-voting, says it’s overdue

The national chairman of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) Engr Yusuf Sani Yabagi, has again made case for the country to settle for e-voting, adding that such ‘is long overdue.’

Speaking on phone with Blueprint Thursday in Abuja, Engr. Yabagi said if adopted e-voting will minimize corruption and checkmate compromise during electoral processes in the country.

Although INEC has refuted the recent reports in some quarters that the Commission was considering adoption of e-voting beginning from 2021.

This position was made known by the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman in a Press Statement.

He said it will require legislation to tamper with the Electoral Act, moreso when the Electoral Act 2010, as amended does not support e-voting.

But reacting to the development, Alhaji Yabagi tasked INEC not to relent in getting the right legislative backing for adoption of e-voting.

Yabagi believe e-voting will reduce the cost of running election in Nigeria.

“The idea of e-voting in Nigeria is long overdue. It will be a welcome idea for the Commission to introduce e-voting for a number of reasons.

It will reduce man hours of accreditation, thumb printing, sorting, transportation for collation, announcement, etc. It will reduce thuggery and ballot box snatching. It will enhance transparency in the entire process. The country does not need to be shut down because of election as people will go about their normal businesses uninterrupted and finally the election results will be instant,” Yabagi said.
