A’Ibom assembly elect Bassey as new speaker

The member representing Uruan state sonstituency, Mr Aniekan Bassey, has emerged speaker of  Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly, replacing Onofiok Duke, who is member-elect for the House of Representatives.

Bassey, a two-term lawmaker, emerged through a consensus arrangement after a stiff contest by three other contestants namely Mr Aniekan Uko (Ibesikpo Asutan), Mr Mark Essiet (Nsit Atai) and a first time lawmaker Mr Anietie Eka (Uyo).

Mrs Felicia Bassey of Okobo state constituency was re-elected deputy speaker, Honourable Udo Kierian retained his position as majority leader, even as other principal officers of the dissolved 6th assembly also maintained their positions.

The emergence of the new leadership of the 7th assembly was characterized by intense scheming and power-play among some political blocs within the Peoples Democratic Party and the re-elected lawmakers.

Governor Udom Emmanuel and the PDP hierarchy is said to have been favourably disposed to the new speaker.

Born on 30th August, 1978, Hon Aniekan Bassey hails from Ekim Enen village in Uruan local government area of Akwa Ibom state. He attended Christ the King Nursery and Primary School from 1984 to 1991, had his secondary education at Uyo High School; 1991- 1993 and Senior Science College Abak between 1993 and1996. 

He did a one year remedial studies in the University of Uyo after which he studied for a degree in chemistry and another degree in sociology and anthropology from the same university. 

He is presently pursuing a Master’s Degree in sociology and anthropology, Master’s Degree in development studies from University of Uyo. 

In 2015, he was election into the state House of Assembly to represent Uruan state constituency and the chairman house services committee and deputy majority leader of the 6th assembly. 

He was also the chairman, committee on science and technology. Given his superlative performance, his people handed him a second term to continue with his good works as their representatives.
