A’Ibom polls: Etinan youths intercept suspected thugs

Vigilant youths in Etinan local government area of Akwa Ibom state who were detailed by the community leaders to watched over the town during the governorship and state Assembly elections today intercepted two buses loaded with persons suspected to be hired thugs.

The youths who besieged the Ekpene Ukpa village end of the bridge-head of the Qua Iboe river in Etinan said they acted on a tip off from their counterpart in Mkpat Enin LGA, who informed them on phone that two buses carrying un-identified men were heading towards Etinan.

Upon interrogation, the men could not speak any of the languages in the state.

One of them suspected to be the gang leader said they were returning from Rivers state to Abuja yesterday when one of their vehicles developed mechanical fault and they had to sleep at Ekparakwa since they could not fix it in the night.

The leade said they contacted a mechanic last night who came and repaired  the bus to enable them travel this morning.

When the suspected thugs sensed that the youths were becoming brutal they decided to retreat.

Speaking to journalists at the bridge-head, the Secretary of the youths Mr Umoh said they had to take such action following rumours that thugs were hired to Akwa Ibom to disrupt election.
