Aisha Buhari calls for women inclusion in governance

Wife of the president, Aisha Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated the need for political parties to dedicate certain percentage to women in governance.

She said “first thing is to tell our political parties that we cannot participate in the election without certain percentage.”

She said this at the 4th Voice of Women (VOW 2019) conference and Awards with the theme: ‘Women, Elevate, Nigeria’ held at the NAF Conference Center, Abuja, Tuesday.

The first lady said, “We are still far from where we want to be and we are also not where we used to be.”

The first lady who was presented with an award of Woman of the Year, commended the Kwara state governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq for having 56 percent inclusion of women in his cabinet.

Wife of the vice president Dolapo Osinbajo stressed that women are much more than what they think they are. “You are capable, you are bold,” she said.

Organizer of the event and CEO Women Radio, Toun Okewale Sonaiya used the occasion to appeal to the “powers that be to ensure that Women Radio spread across Nigeria; adding that it is the only women radio in Africa.

Chairman Board of Directors, Women Radio Dr Babatunde Okewale stated that conversation and dialogues on women should be critically put on the front burner with a focus on issues that are recognized as obstacles  for women including unequal pay and unequal distribution at leadership levels.

“We must not continue to limit our ability to compete globally by limiting opportunities for women and limiting opportunities for the girl child by not educating her. Our future as a developed nation cannot be realized without giving the girl child an equal opportunity,” he said.
