As primary school teachers in public schools across Oyo state on Monday embarked on an indefinite strike, the state governor-elect, Engr Seyi Makinde has alleged the outgoing administration in the state of encouraging the action.
Makinde in a statement issued by his spokesman, Prince Dotun Oyelade alleged that the strike was among alleged ploys by the outgoing administration at creating problem for his incoming administration.
“The same government is encouraging primary school teachers to embark on an indefinite strike from this week. The same government collected Common Entrance fees from pupils since March and has refused to fix examination date and they are leaving office ” he said.
Academic activities were paralysed in all primary schools across Oyo state early yesterday followed an indefinite strike embarked upon by the teachers in protest of what the state NUT chapter called delay in payment of salaries of public primary school teachers and failure of the state government to meet other requests of the teachers.
The state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Mr Samson Adedoyin while speaking on the indefinite strike disclosed that the teachers have no other option than to embark on the strike as the state government failed to meet up with most of the demands put before it by the NUT on the primary school teachers in the state.
As at 8am, all the public primary schools in the state were shut with the striking teachers sending back the pupils from their various schools.
In most of the public primary schools visited by our Correspondent particularly in Mokola, Oniyanrin, Aperin, Mosfala, Agodi NTA area, Okepadre, Isale Ijebu, Bode and Molete , the primary schools in the area were shut with the pupils heading back home
However, the NUT Chairman has vowed that the union is not ready to called off the strike until the government meet the demands of primary school teachers in the state.
“It is when the government is ready to meet our demands. It all depends on the government. If the government is ready to meet our demands, we are ready to suspend the strike”. he said
