Nigerian leaders have been reminded to fashion out positive attitude towards correcting past leadership mistakes and adapt policies that would promote national cohesion.
Formal Chief Security Officer to late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, in a remark as guest speaker at a dinner night organised by the Nigeria Association of Social Workers (NASW) in Abuja at the weekend, reminded the conservative elements to accommodate the yearnings of the people or the wind of change will eventually sweep them out like a hurricane.
“May those in office and those with bulky pockets who do not want change remember that you can only delay the inevitable wind but cannot stop its movement,” he said.
Al-Mustapha expressed sadness about what he called “the short-comings in leadership in Nigeria,” stressing that leaders must be on their feet in order to right the wrongs of the past, especially what he termed “unacceptable routines.”
“Creativity and change are what we should bring into governance. New things are what the nation requires now. Weak men and men should also be assisted to live better in the face of harsh economic realities,” he said.
He regretted that the present leaders do not understand the importance of synergy or reflect on their actions due to the amount of funds they line up their pockets with at the expense of the majority of Nigerians and warned that the younger generation will continue to be restive and agitate for change, no matter the force that may be used to suppress their views.
“It is better for me to be called wrong names or be accused of opposition but the nation must move forward. Nigeria is earnestly yearning for growth, moving forward and may those in public office know this,” he stated.
