All political leaders must take Covid-19 vaccine – Sultan …We’re taking it, SGF replies

The Sultan of Sokoto and president-general, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, said Friday that all political leaders in the country must first take Covid-19 vaccine before “common men can take it.”

He stated this at the second NSCIA Covid-19 vaccine sensitisation programme for Muslim scholars and Imams at the Sheraton Hotels & Towers, Abuja.

According to him, Nigerians watched President Muhammadu Buhari take the vaccine and, therefore, all other political leaders must follow his example.

“The president took it and all political leaders must take it first because it is when they are strong and alive that they can lead well. Many don’t believe in the vaccine and many don’t believe it exists. I have many questions to ask, but I reserve my questions.

“Knowledge is power. It is left for people to decide if they want to take the vaccine. Nobody would be forced to take it. We shall look at issues and listen to experts,” he said.

In his remarks, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19, Boss Mustapha, assured the Sultan that political leaders were already taking the vaccine.

He said, “The president led the way and all ministers, members of the PTF and other political leaders are taking the vaccine. We must guide our people right.”

Also, the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, re-assured the Imams and Muslim scholars that the vaccine “is safe and Nigerians must not hesitate to take it.”

He said when some European countries discovered that there were complaints of blood clots and other side effects, they decided to halt vaccination.

He said further that by Thursday, it was discovered that there was no relationship between blood clot and the vaccine.

“Consequently, the European countries that halted the vaccination of citizens have resumed the exercise. The decision to halt vaccination in the European countries was a normal procedure in science,” he said.

The secretary-general, NSCIA, speaking on the topic, “The future is here,” said the Sultan “is a democrat and that is why he said taking the vaccine is a decision individuals will take.”

He warned that “very soon, Saudi Arabia will declare that whoever does not take the vaccine would not be able to perform the holy pilgrimage to Mecca.”
