AMAC chair: Group petitions NJC, NBA, NUJ, others over Maikalangu’s removal

The Concerned Youths for Good Governance and Justice (CYGG) has petitioned the National Judicial Council (NJC), the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), the Police Service Commission (PSC), the Joint Services Department of the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Justice and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) over what it described as “miscarriage of justice against the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Chairman, Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu.”

Recall that on August 5, Chairman of the Local Council Election Tribunal sitting in Abuja, Justice Muninat Folashade Oyekan, in the presence of the Secretary of the tribunal, Bala Ahmed Ndajiwo and member of the tribunal, Kimi Livingstone, declared Murtala Usman Karshi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the validly elected chairman of AMAC.

The tribunal said Karshi polled 21, 000 votes while Maikalangu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled 19, 000 votes.

Maikalangu subsequently appealed the judgement, calling on his supporters to stay calm and await the decision of the Appeal Court.

However, addressing journalists, Monday in Abuja after submitting the petition to NJC, National Coordinator of CYGG, Comrade Yunusa Ahmadu Yusuf, implored the NJC, NBA, NUJ and other authorities to “intervene and prevent the miscarriage of justice” by reviewing the case that led to Maikalangu’s removal from office.

He said: “We have observed with keen interest the political development in the country, especially the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and come to a conclusion that the Judiciary, which has always been the last hope of the common man, is gradually derailing from its original purpose and we cannot allow the good name of the Judiciary to be dragged on the mold by some selected few.

“We are calling on the NJC to withdraw that last Tribunal Judgement that ordered the AMAC Chairman to leave office, that he did not win the election because that was a completely wrong judgment from Judges, who were misled by some desperate politicians.”
