AMAC tackles indiscriminate waste disposal

Authorities of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) have vowed to sustain the rejuvenated battle against indiscriminate waste disposal and other environmental nuisances through exhaustive enlightenment and sensitisation residents.
This, according to them, is to help them to realise the importance of good sanitary habits and clean environments.
The Council said it also would ensure the sustainability of efforts toward curbing the menace, which had led to heaps of dirt on
major roads, especially in the in satellite towns and other remote communities in the Territory.
Speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing massive evacuation of waste indiscriminately dumped in the satellite towns, the AMAC Chairman, Adamu Abdullahi Candido, stressed that having good sanitary habits was the best “as it enables people to properly dispose waste they generate, instead of only waiting for the government to always
come around to remove such dirt.”
He noted that evacuation of dirt overrunning major streets in some parts of the Territory cost government huge resources that could have been used for the provision of other essential services.
He, therefore, called on traditional leaders and other opinion leaders to live up to expectations, by ensuring that people within their domains desisted from discriminately disposing waste.
“We will continue to promote the sustainability of the campaign through further enlightenment and sensitisation of the people, and once we are able to do that, it will be better for our health,” he said.
Also, speaking, the HOD of Environment, Hajiya Maimunatu Abubakar, said the sensitisation campaign was in cognizance of the role of communal efforts in the quest for sustainable environmental sanitation in the Territory. She said: “For now, we have been given a mandate to scan through every AMAC communities and map out refuse collection points, in order to help the people abstain from indiscriminate dumping of refuse especially on the road median.
“Therefore, if you generate your waste, instead of indiscriminately dumping them on the road median, you should go to the designated places and dump them there, so that when we are to evacuate we go to such places and do so with ease.”
