Amina Zakari’s family explains INEC commissioner’s relationship with Buhari

Family of the National Commissioner in charge of Health and Welfare at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Amina Zakari, have risen in stout defence of the electoral official, saying critics should leave her alone to do her job.

A statement by Isah Zakari, a lawyer, faulted some of the claims published in media reports about the INEC official, insisting that rather than being castigated, Mrs. Zakari should be celebrated as an accomplished woman.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other opposition figures had accused President Muhammadu Buhari of plotting to use Amina Zakari to rig the forthcoming elections. That was after she was appointed the chairperson of a committee that would coordinate the collation

Isah Zakari explained on behalf of the family that: “Contrary to the widespread belief, Amina Zakari is not a blood relation of President Muhammadu Buhari. Her mother was from Daura (born and bred in Kano) and she was not Buhari’s sister. It’s also true that Buhari’s sister was once married into the family. The union was short lived and did not produce a child. This all happened well before Mrs. Zakari was born.

“Furthermore, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, the veteran Kano politician who first made the claim that she was born by Buhari’s sister has since recanted. Those who have held on to the claim are therefore either

unaware of his recantation or they are simply incapable of letting go their prejudices in the face of facts to the contrary.”
