The Anambra state government, Monday, said it has set up a family court to tackle issues relating to domestic violence in the area.
The court, it was learnt, came to the fore following the increasing number of domestic violence reported in the state, among which was suspension of the Transition Committee chairman of Nnewi North local government area due to circumstances that led to the death of his wife.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Ify Obinabo, who stated this while receiving United Business Women And Farmers Association in her office, stated that Governor Charles Soludo’s led administration has zero tolerance to domestic violence.
“We have ten cases of domestic violence at our family court and out of that number, nine suspects were remanded at the awaiting trial section while one was granted bail. But this is not in Anambra state alone and our state has one of the lowest cases of death through domestic violence and this recent one makes it the fifth case,” she stated.
In her address, the national president of the association, Mrs Nkiru Nwagbo, solicited the support of the state government in building capacity of women through programs and empowerment.
