The United Progressive Party (UPP) has appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to step up its voter education activities to encourage huge voters’ turnout in the coming Anambra governorship.
The party lamented the lack of adequate voter education and motivation and mobilisation of voters ahead of the election, adding that it fears INEC’s failure to embark on awareness creation could lead to voter apathy.
“We wish to appeal to INEC to fulfil their pledge to political stakeholders in Nigeria especially political parties that the Commission shall be fully involved in voter education which is one of its primary responsibilities.
“It will be helpful and encourage unprecedented voter turnout in Anambra governorship election if INEC can step out this time to promote the method it promised Nigerians it will adopt in the Anambra governorship election.”
Further, the party said it would do a lot of good if the INEC could rise up to the responsibility of preparing necessary logistics in proper prospective ahead of the election.
It said the INEC should act in tangent with its promise to put such facilities that would boost the exercise in place: “Namely the use of upgrade card readers, the availability of functional card readers for all the 6,200 polling units in Anambra State”, Okorie said.
“The provision of Standby card readers in the event of any breakdown during the exercise, open counting and announcement of result at the polling unit, the capture of the result of the voters with the card reader and the immediate transmission of the same to the central server at the state capital, Akwa”, the statement said.
The party said such arrangements would go a long way in reassuring Anambra electorate that the election would be free and fair and that their votes would count.
It urged to INEC to publish soonest the specimen ballot papers so that parties would know where their parties are located on the ballot sheet.
