Anambra: LG boss urges Obiano to banish suspended monarchs

The Transition Committee Chairman, Anambra East Local Government Area, Anambra State, Mr Obiora Nweke, has urged governor Willie Obiano to dethrone and banish the 13 suspended traditional rulers.
Twelve monarchs were last month slammed with one year suspension over gross misconduct, barely some weeks after their colleague was suspended in like manner due to some alleged petitions against him.
The monarchs allegedly travelled to Abuja to commend President Muhammadu on the various ongoing and completed federal government projects in the South East geopolitical zone.

Nweke’s council area which is where governor Willie Obiano hails from, produced three out of the 13 embattled monarchs namely, Igwe Alex Edozieuno of Mkpunando, Igwe Peter Ikegbuna Udorji (Eziaguluotu) and Igwe Nkeli Nzekwesili of Igbariam. But two, Mkpunando and Eziaguluotu communities last Sunday, September 6, ‘crowned’ new monarchs to replace the suspended ones.
The transition committee boss, while speaking to Blueprint on Thursday, after a meeting with the newly crowned traditional Ruler of Mkpunando, Igwe-elect Johnson Onyeaka-Mbanaefo and his entourage, said the suspended monarchs desecrated the land by their action and should therefore face the consequences.

“I am in support of the state government action. I wish they could be dethroned and banished because suspension is a lesser punishment. They committed what we call ‘alu’ (an abomination) in Igbo land. Most of them have so many petitions filed against them by their subjects. So, for government to suspend them shows the government also found fault at them,” he added, promising to forward name of the Traditional ruler-elect for Mkpunando to the state government for possible recognition.
Earlier, the Igwe-elect of Mkpunando, Johnson Onyeaka-Mbanaefo, said his crown has liberated his community from atrocities and underdevelopment, assuring his readiness to uphold the custom and tradition of the land, while ensuring that fundamental human rights of his subjects were never trapped on.

“I come to liberate Mkpunando people. Everyone is happy with me. I will never let them down. I will run an open door policy to ensure that every developmental projects coming to this town from the government or individuals are being executed perfectly and transparently. My throne will not infringe on people rights. I can accept my predecessor back to the community if he repents and shows remorse over his action. But Mkpunando will never accept him back as Igwe. He can only return as an ordinary citizen,” he added.
